  • Sample Lesson Plan
General Information
This course is for students who have a strong background in English language, and are interested in reading literature from around the world. A great deal of the work will be related to English, Latin American, and American literature analysis.
Course Description
This course is primarily designed to engage students in the reading, writing, and speaking process through an examination of literature across borders, genres, and artistic boundaries. Students will develop an understanding of how the place of origin and chronology of a work of literature affects its meaning. Through reading, interpreting, analyzing, comparing and evaluating fiction, poetic, and nonfiction texts from around the world, students will demonstrate an understanding of diverse world views.
Pre‐Requisites
Students should be in at least grade 9 and should have taken the Saint Paul courses in Beginning ESL and Intermediate ESL and advanced ESL. This course is intended for students in grades 10 and above to fulfill language arts requirements as per the Minnesota Department of Education requirements. On‐Native English speaking students should also have a SLEP test or TOEFL test or WIDA test score that is within the range of the classmates entering into the course. Students should also have at least one semester of English Composition, which introduces the basics of writing, reading, and research skills. Discretion for students wishing to enter the class rests solely with the Principal or Dean of Academics.
Learning Objectives
1. Students demonstrate through both spoken and written English their understanding of literature as a product of its culture.
2. Students demonstrate comprehension of the similarities and differences among works of literature from different places and times.
3. Students are able to compare and contrast works of literature from different genres and artistic styles.
4. Students apply Standard English grammar conventions and correctly use the MLA style format for written assignments.
5. Students compose texts that are coherent, well‐reasoned and supported by introductions, supporting evidence, and conclusions.
6. Students are able to speak about a work of literature in a manner that allows the audience to comprehend important ideas.
7. Students understand and correctly integrate new vocabulary words into their written and spoken communications.
Throughout the course, we will follow the schedule below:
Sep 2 – Oct 18: Introduction (MLA, plagiarism); Lord of the Flies; short stories
Oct 21 – Nov 22: Night; nonfiction handouts
Nov 25 – Dec 20: One Hundred Years of Solitude; magical realism
Jan 6 – Jan 21: Magical realism handouts; poetry
Jan 27 – Feb 28: Essential Tales of Edgar Allen Poe
March 3 – April 4: The Road
April 7 – April 25: Independent reading projects; digital media handouts
April 28 ‐ June 13: Brave New World
Learning Objectives
In addition to the learning objectives listed above, a primary goal of this course is to facilitate students’ development of communication skills. Each lesson will contain a specific language objective designed to help students grow in their abilities to read, write, listen, and speak. Students are to be able to make sense of what they read and analyze the stories that are required for the course. By the end of this course, students will be able to:
  • Describe a story both in writing and orally to a partner.
  • Communicate complex ideas in writing and by speaking with the teacher and classmates.
  • Listen and provide written and oral feedback to other students’ ideas and presentations.

***Important Note 1: Homework will largely consist of independent reading. If a student fails to diligently keep up with his or her reading assignments, the teacher reserves the right to lower his or her class participation grade AND overall grade.
***Important Note 2: This syllabus is intended to be a guideline. The requirements, evaluation, and course schedule are subject to revision and refinement by the teacher.
Tests
Composed of multiple choice, true/false, short answer, and essay questions. You will be given at least one week’s notice before an exam. Exam dates will be announced in class.
Homework
Assignments will typically involve some combination of reading and writing activities. Homework is due at the beginning of the class period after it was assigned.
Quizzes
You will be given unannounced quizzes to make sure you are prepared for class and putting your best effort into your homework assignments. Any material we have covered is fair game on a quiz. Quiz questions will often (but not always) be very similar to your homework.
Essays
Students are expected to write essays in English to answer specific questions provided by the teacher or give a reaction and analysis of the literature under discussion. Essays are typically 3‐5 pages, doublespaced and are expected to be done according to specifications provided by the instructor.
Research Projects
There will be a few important research projects students need to complete in the course. The projects will be announced and explained in time. They are intended to be opportunities for interactive learning.
Quizzes are closed textbook, but open notebook and open homework. On quizzes, you MAY use your class notes in your notebook, your homework assignments, and any reference tables given for that unit. You may NOT use your textbook, your friend’s notebook, or notes printed out from the Internet.

Expectations
I expect that you will:
  • Respect yourself, others, and the school environment.
  • Be in class and on time.
  • Give your best effort every day.
  • Be honest in your work, relationships, and actions.
  • Help create a safe and productive learning environment.
  • Be a positive leader in our global community.
  • Actively participate during in‐class discussions, projects, and presentations.
  • Finish all assignments by the required due date.
  • Follow the MLA format for all written assignments.
  • Bring your class notebook (minimum 100 full‐sized blank pages) each day.
  • Respect yourself, your classmates, and your teacher.
Procedures
What to do (and not to do) in class:
Being on time to class means you are ready to learn
You should be in your seat with materials out by the time the bell rings. Passing time is 5 minutes, which provides plenty of time to use the restroom, socialize with friends and be to class on time.
Missed class
You are responsible for material covered when you are absent. If you have an unexcused absence when an assig
nment is due, you will receive a zero grade. For excused absences, you are given two make‐up days for every day you are absent. This means that if you miss class on Monday and return on Wednesday, the work you missed on Monday is due Friday. Missed labs must be made up – see the instructor to arrange a time to perform the experiment.
The most common reason for students receiving a zero on an assignment is that they did not make it up when they were absent. I do not chase down students or remind them that they have missed work when they are absent. Students are responsible for ensuring that assignments are completed on time.
*****NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED*****
Homework and labs are due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date. Homework and labs handed in after this are late and will receive a zero grade.
Cell phones
Cell phones are not allowed in class. You must be turned off and stow your phone during class. If I catch you using your cell phone during class, I will turn it in to the headmaster.
Plagiarism & Cheating
Students involved in any type of plagiarism – either submitting answers not their own that they don’t understand, supplying answers to other students, copying another student’s work, or making up lab data – will be given a zero for the assignment.
INSTRUCTOR will, under no circumstances, write a letter of recommendation for any student who is involved with plagiarism in her class, regardless of the size of the infraction.
