Course Description
Students will primarily focus on literature that is not originally written in English, beginning with ancient Greek mythology and Homer’s The Odyssey. After this, students will begin a series of units, focusing on selections of contemporary and historical literature from across the world ‐ the Americas, Europe, Africa, and Asia. These literary selections include short stories, plays, poetry, and other forms of prose. Students will write responses to literature, and compose poetry in the style of spirit of some of the poetry they read.
In addition, students will read William Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar and The Merchant of Venice (two of the pieces originally written in English). In studying these plays, students will note Shakespeare’s ability to create complex, believable characters, and develop and expound on themes of the human experience, which are as relevant today as the time in which these works were composed and originally performed.
All of these literary selections (contemporary or historical) excited, intrigued, and provoked their original audiences to think and wonder. Students will examine and discover why, by noting the common themes these works of literature often share, and noting how – with alterations for the target audience – these are often the prevalent themes of modern literature, including stories told through the various mediums of “pop culture.”
Students will also gain exposure to concise and expressive vocabulary, in the context of the selected readings, and from supplemental sources. Students must then concisely use this vocabulary.
Learning Objectives
  1. Study a diverse range of literatures and genres of writing for breadth and master some in depth.
  2. Articulate the ways in which selected works of literature challenge and change our conceptions of society, culture, and art.
  3. Identify and discuss the aesthetic and cultural elements in given works of literature. Be able to incorporate such elements in one's creative or critical writing, as appropriate.
  4. Articulate the intimate connections between works of literature and histories, cultures, and world views.
  5. Make meaningful connections between literatures/writing and real‐world problems. For example, make practical applications of writing through community‐based courses or through the acquired skill of authorial voice and formal essay techniques.
  6. Practice the study of literature and the craft of writing as a collaborative creative process, both in and out of the classroom.
  7. Regardless of concentration, gain experience writing both critically and creatively. Be able to organize, research, and communicate ideas effectively in both oral and written form. Be competent in various strategies of literary craft and experimentation in order to produce compelling creative works.
  8. Make connections between the study of literature, the craft of writing, critical theory, and interdisciplinary study.
  9. Gain proficiency in the use of appropriate technologies to explore literatures/writing.
  10. Gain the critical and creative skills to be adequately prepared for graduate school in literature‐related fields, or for employment in such fields as art, law, publishing, journalism, education, non‐profit grant work, business, and creative or professional writing.

Procedures
What to do (and not to do) in class:
Being on time to class means you are ready to learn
You should be in your seat with materials out by the time the bell rings. Passing time is 10 minutes, which provides plenty of time to use the restroom, socialize with friends and be to class on time. Missed class
You are responsible for material covered when you are absent. If you have an unexcused absence when an assignment is due, you will receive a zero grade. For excused absences, you are given two make‐up days for every day For excused absences, you are given two make‐up days for every day you are absent. This means that if you miss class on Monday and return on Wednesday, the work you missed on Monday is due Friday. Missed labs must be made up – see the instructor to arrange a time to perform the experiment.
The most common reason for students receiving a zero on an assignment is that they did not make it up when they were absent. Use ADD SCHOOL GRADING SYSTEM as a tool to know which assignments are missing. I do not chase down students or remind them that they have missed work when they are absent. Students are responsible for ensuring that assignments are completed on time.
*****NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED*****
Homework and labs are due at the beginning of class on the assigned due date. Homework and labs handed in after this are late and will receive a zero grade.
Lab report format
All questions must be answered in complete sentences. We will discuss the requirements for a formal lab report when the first lab report is assigned.
Cell phones
Cell phones are not allowed in class. You must be turned off and stow your phone during class. If I catch you using your cell phone during class, I will keep your phone until 3:05 pm that day.
Plagiarism& Cheating
Students involved in any type of plagiarism – either submitting answers not their own that they don’t understand, supplying answers to other students, copying another student’s work, or making up lab data – will be given a zero for the assignment.
INSTRUCTOR will, under no circumstances, write a letter of recommendation for any student who is involved with plagiarism in her class, regardless of the size of the infraction.
Questions?
Parents, guardians, and host parents: If you have any questions, comments, or concerns, please feel free to contact me! E‐mail is the best way to reach me. I am happy to answer questions via e‐mail, meet with you in person, or have a phone conversation.
Students: I want you to succeed in this class! If you have questions, are struggling with the course material, are concerned about your grade, or have any other concerns, please come talk to me sooner rather than later. I am happy to find a time to meet with you before school, after school, or during lunch.
