Course Description
(Course Length: one‐year)
Global Studies 8, school credit, one full year Grade eight features geography as the lead discipline with a strong secondary emphasis on contemporary world history. Content drawn from citizenship and government, and economics, enriches the study of world regional geography, and further develops the interdisciplinary "Studies" approach. The Global Studies benchmarks pertain to four themes offering students additional opportunities for integrated learning experiences. Students in Global Studies explore the regions of the world using geographic information from print and electronic sources. They analyze important trends in the modern world such as demographic change, shifting trade patterns, and intensifies cultural interactions due to globalization. Students participate in civic discussion on contemporary issues, conduct historical inquiry and study events over the last half century that have shaped the contemporary world. They analyze connections between revolutions, independence movements and social transformations, and understand reasons for the creation of modern nation states. They learn the governments are based on different political philosophies and serve various purposes. By learning economic principles of trade and the factors that affect economic growth, students understand why there are different standards of living in countries around the world. Course Pre‐Requisites
Satisfactory completion of 7th grade Social Studies will help in preparing you for World History.

Course Language Objectives
By its nature, Social Studies content lends itself to the sharing of personal narratives. Many ELL students have a wealth of experiences and points of view that can enhance their understanding and deepen fellow students’ understanding. A safe classroom environment is essential for these students to share these assets.
Social Studies as a content will also:
Use text variety such as graphic organizers, graphs, charts, maps, poems, literature, images, video, music and art. Intentionally use pre‐reading, during reading, and post reading strategies to help all students access texts.
Use intentional identification by the teacher of vocabulary essential to understanding the text, content, context, and concepts.
Integrate ELL students with groups of all levels.

The adopted text is McGraw‐Hill’s World History and Geography, Jackson J. Spielvogel, Ph.D., 2013 The course content will be liberally supplemented by various magazine articles, newspaper articles, essays, texts, novels, and stories.

A vast array of learning activities will be utilized for this course. From reading texts, letters, biographies, essays, watching films, scouring maps, creating maps, and researching our own family histories and experiences, students will engage with the course material proactively.

Main Activity:
Students will group up and dissect the elements of a pencil. Students will also discuss how the elements are transported to create the pencil and delivered the product to the consumer.

Main Activity:
Students will play a map game in which they must ask relevant descriptive questions in order to ascertain answers. Students will also play a game demanding they recall various country names due to their place in alphabetical order.

Main Activity:
Students will walk the room analyzing a variety of historical pictures from the1950s. They will write about their meaning and the personal significance of the pictures. Students will take notes on the lecture concerning the major events of the decade.
Evaluation:
Class discussion concerning the picture as well as the events of the decade will help to gauge student understanding of the lesson. Also, a handout will be completed over the weekend to ensure understanding.
