Course Description
Social Studies is geared towards the 6th grade student who will be focusing on the various aspects of the United States government. From the aspect of citizenship and its role in government, to economics, geography, to history, numerous aspects of the United States will be analyzed. An understanding will be gained of the political structure of the country from the local seats of power to the global relationships the country maintains.
Course Pre‐Requisites
Satisfactory completion of 5th grade social studies will help prepare students for this class.
Course Language Objectives
Students will learn how to describe the establishment and expansion of rights over time, including the impact of key court cases, state legislation and constitutional amendments. Students will learn how to explain the relationship among the three branches of government. Students will define federalism and describe the relationship between the powers of the federal and state governments. Students will describe how laws are created, explain the differences between civil and criminal law, and give examples of federal, state and local laws. Students will describe the movement of goods and services, resources and money through markets in a market‐based economy. They will create and use various kinds of maps, incorporating the TODALSS map basics.
Course language objectives
By its nature, Social Studies content lends itself to the sharing of personal narratives. Many ELL students have a wealth of experiences and points of view that can enhance their understanding and deepen fellow students’ understanding. A safe classroom environment is essential for these students to share these assets. Social Studies as a content will also: Use text variety such as graphic organizers, graphs, charts, maps, poems, literature, images, video, music and art. Intentionally use pre‐reading, during reading, and post reading strategies to help all students access texts. Use intentional identification by the teacher of vocabulary essential to understanding the text, content, context, and concepts. Integrate ELL students with groups of all levels.
Units, themes,and Course Organization
This course will tackle the following units: Citizenship and government ‐ focusing on civic skills, rights and responsibilities, and governmental institutions and political processes. Economics‐ focusing on economic reasoning skills, personal finance, fundamental concepts of economics, and microeconomic concepts. Geography‐ focusing on geospatial skills, human systems, and human environmental interaction. History‐ focusing on historical thinking skills and United States history.
Learning Activities and Methods
A vast array of learning activities will be utilized for this course. From reading texts, letters, biographies, essays, watching films, scouring maps, creating maps, and researching our own family histories and experiences, students will engage with the course material proactively.
